What is a Handmade Rug?
Handmade rugs & kilims are textile artworks created using traditional techniques and a great deal of manual effort. In contrast to machine-made carpets, every stage here—from selecting materials to spinning and dyeing the yarns, to the actual construction—is carried out meticulously by skilled artisans or small ateliers.
Traditionally, handmade rugs originate from Oriental countries with a particularly rich and long legacy in rug making. Great origins include Iran/Persia, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, China, the Caucasus, and Turkey—cultural spaces where the art of rug knotting and weaving has been passed down through generations for centuries.
The result: Rugs and kilims with unique structure, presence, and intrinsic value—each piece a true original with individual character and visible history.
Manufacturing Processes: How Handmade Rugs & Kilims Are Made
Hand-knotted Rugs
- 1) Material selection & preparation: Precious materials such as new wool, the finest silk, or robust blends are selected, spun by hand or on traditional wheels, then coloured as per the design. Dyeing is typically done using classical vegetable dyes or modern, long-lasting colours.
- 2) Knotting by hand on the loom: The most labour-intensive of traditional techniques. Each yarn is hand-tied around taut warps and knotted off. Knot density, alongside the pattern, determines both fineness and lifespan. The more knots per square metre, the finer and more valuable the result. Motifs are often created freehand or from a drawn pattern.
- 3) Shearing and washing: After knotting, the pile is clipped to the desired height. A thorough wash using water and natural soap gives sheen, removes excess dye, and sets the pattern.
- 4) Finishing, edgework & quality control: Edges and fringes are finished according to region and style. Lastly, the artisans carefully inspect work, shape, and colour before the rug enters the market.

Handloom-knotted Rugs
- 1) Preparation & yarn selection: Here, too, only quality yarns are selected—hand-spun or machine-spun, then prepared and dyed on so-called looms.
- 2) Knotting on semi-mechanical looms: Compared to classic hand-knotting, semi-manual looms are used to ease the work, though a high degree of handwork and precision is still required. Knot density is usually somewhat lower, but individual patterns and colours are still possible.
- 3) Finishing & quality check: Once knotting is complete, finishing follows as for hand-knotted rugs: washing, contour clipping, edge and fringe work. These rugs bridge authentic handwork and modern technique, offering quality at more attractive prices.

Hand-woven Kilims
- 1) Yarn selection and dyeing: Premium wool or cotton yarns spun by hand and dyed in natural or modern colours.
- 2) Weaving on the loom: Kilims are created by interlacing warp and weft only. There is no pile, and the textile can usually be used on both sides. Thanks to special techniques, geometric or vibrant patterns arise.
- 3) Finishing, setting & care: Edges are sewn or bound. After finishing and wash, the kilim is ready for versatile use—as a rug, tapestry, throw, or even table cover.

Hand-tufted Rugs
- 1) Yarn selection & dyeing: Fine wool, cotton, or modern blends are selected—often dyed by hand or in small workshops to create the unique colour palette of each rug.
- 2) Design transfer & tufting: The design is sketched onto the base fabric (usually cotton or a blend). Using a manual tufting gun, yarn is threaded by hand—loop by loop—into the fabric, allowing even complex or multicoloured patterns to be produced efficiently and precisely.
- 3) Backing, cutting & finishing: The fibre is fixed with latex on the reverse. Rugs usually receive a cotton or felt backing. The surface is cut (for pile) or left as loops—relief and sculptural effects are possible. Edges are neatly sewn. After final quality control and cleaning, the rug is ready for use.
